This is my final piece for the 4D project, the goal of this project was to create a title sequence using 4D illustration. I chose to create a title sequence for a historical drama called “Ashes” which is based on the rise and fall of the Vikings within the United Kingdom.
Additionally for this task I had to learn how to create animated illustrations, so to start off we were asked to create a collection of ten gifs to familiarise ourselves with this process, these are available to see on my 4D development page.
After experimenting I decided that I would use a decorative “Nordic” style for my final animation, I drew out all the parts that were needed for this animation by hand and then scanned and moved them around within Photoshop. Additionally I was inspired by shadow puppets during this project so I decided to layer my design up, I really liked how this style turned out because even though it is a bit jumpy in the animation it seems to fit well with the overall theme.
I used a dark red overlay on top of my designs, I decided to do this after I had tested what a stark black and white design would have looked like. But the red tones really added to the design and tie all of the parts of the title sequence together, as well as hinting to the colours of both fire and blood.
